Hockey: CBA pulls away from Guilderland/Mohonasen

— The Christian Brothers Academy hockey team didn’t allow Guilderland/Mohonasen to hang around this time.

The Brothers (6-3-0 league, 6-6-1 overall) scored three times in the second period and received solid goaltending from Kyle Stockman to defeat the Dutch Warriors 6-1 in Saturday’s Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Albany County Hockey Facility.

It was CBA’s fifth victory in its last six games – a stretch that also included a 2-1 overtime road win against Division II power Glens Falls last Thursday.

“They’ve bought into the concept that we’re going to the Sectional final,” said CBA coach Jeff Fraser. “Do we have the most talent in the league? No, but it’s about the sum of the parts.”

CBA’s recent string of success began with a 6-4 victory over Guilderland/Mohonasen (2-6-0, 3-8-1) Dec. 17 at the Times Union Center. In that game, the Dutch Warriors rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three second-period goals before the Brothers ultimately prevailed.

There was no rally for Guilderland/Mohonasen this time. Coming off a 6-2 loss to Queensbury the night before and playing on the ACHF’s Olympic-sized ice sheet, the Dutch Warriors had a difficult time getting their legs going.

“We’re struggling,” said Guilderland/Mohonasen coach John DeRubertis. “The big ice surface probably comes into play.”

The one bright spot for the Dutch Warriors was the play of goaltenders Nigel Simmons and Austin McCrum. Simmons made 16 saves over the first two periods before giving way to McCrum, who stopped 13 of the 15 shots he faced in the third period.

“I thought Nigel [Simmons] did a nice job starting out,” said DeRubertis. “He made some nice saves, and he shouldn’t be faulted for any of the goals he gave up.”

Simmons allowed only one goal in the first period – a blistering shot by CBA’s Zach Swantek on a power play. That gave Guilderland/Mohonasen some hope entering the second period.
