UPDATE: Officers disciplined after attempted jail escape

— Seven police officers were disciplined and one officer retired following the attempted escape from the Albany County Correctional Facility on Friday, June 8, according to the Albany County Sheriff's office.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office investigated an attempted escape from the Albany County Correctional Facility after an inmate left a medical evaluation.

On Friday, June 8, Leon Banks, 44, of Schenectady, was sent to county jail on grand larceny and burglary charges in the Town of Colonie. Police said after Banks left a medical evaluation, he went unnoticed into the booking area. There he found three unsecured doors and was able to gain entry into a property room where he changed clothes. Police said Banks waited there for 90 minutes, until he was noticed by a corrections officer.

Charges are currently pending, but one corrections officer was suspended without pay as of Monday, June 11.

The Sheriff's office said "no major policy changes" took place and that if policies were followed the incident would not have occurred. The investigation is closed.
