GLENVILLE For local fire departments, finding volunteers can sometimes be a challenge, but the East Glenville Fire Department is getting a lot of help from a single family.
The department on Monday, June 11, inducted Nicholas Abel during its fire company meeting, but Fire Company President K. Wayne Bunn stressed this isn’t a typical induction.
Nicholas Abel joined his mother, Tracy, and father, Ken, who volunteer for the department, which Bunn said marks the first time the fire company has had a father, mother and son trio serving at the same time.
“It is an usual thing,” Bunn said.
Ken Abel is an active fire fighter and EMT and is a firematic captain, too. He also does training for the department. Tracy Abel serves as an EMT and is also the social secretary for the company.
Nicholas Abel said he enjoys the different skills needed and the “feel good” vibe after helping someone.
“It is a good atmosphere with fun guys,” he said. “I am plan on being a volunteer as long as possible.”
He is graduating from Burnt Hills High School this month and plans to attend Schenectady County Community College in the fall. His goal is to become a registered nurse.
The fire department also awarded him $1,000 through its College Scholarship for Volunteerism, which was based on his active participation with the Alplaus and East Glenville Fire Departments.
He said he would urge anyone to give volunteering for the fire department a try.
“There is a job for everybody in the fire department, from directing traffic … to the guys on the hose,” he said.
Nicholas’s father had shown him the “fun parts” of the department and had an influence on his decision to join.
Ken Abel has served as a firefighter for 28 years and joined the East Glenville Fire Department in 2001. He previously served as a paid firefighter for General Electric.
