LATHAM Friday's girls lacrosse game between Shaker and Niskayuna was nearly a carbon copy of their first meeting.
The Blue Bison (13-1 league, 13-1 overall) used a late surge to defeat the Silver Warriors 10-7 in Latham and clinch the second-best overall record in the Suburban Council.
Just as they did when they beat Niskayuna 7-5 April 28, the Blue Bison rallied from a one-goal deficit early in the second half to turn the game in their favor. Kate Cheney scored twice in the span of two minutes to put Shaker ahead 8-6, and Julia Lennon added a pair of goals to seal the victory.
"The key to this victory today was good possessions and good decisions," said Shaker coach Courtney Hill. "You can never work on stick skills enough. We didn't force the shot, and we stayed patient."
Shaker jumped out to a 3-0 lead on first-half goals by Anne Rehfuss, Lauren Smith and Sarah Cheney. Niskayuna (11-3, 11-4) responded by scoring the next four goals, three of which came within 39 seconds of each other. Kayla Treanor and Catherine Sexton each scored twice during the Silver Warriors' spurt.
Smith tied the score at 4 on a free position goal with 49.2 seconds left in the first half, but Treanor tallied to open the second half to put Niskayuna ahead 5-4. It was the last lead the Silver Warriors would have, as Shaker scored the next two goals to build a 6-5 advantage.
The Blue Bison defense took over from there, as goaltender Anne Morrison made several key saves to help her team pull out the victory.
"It got pretty intense there at the end,'' said Morrison, who had 15 saves. "I just focused on the ball. I wanted to contribute my part, and that's to keep the ball out of the net.''
