Girls soccer: Schalmont moves on in Class B

Early goal propels Sabres past Marcellus

When Filtch broke through the defense and scored with 9:13 left, the Sabres maintained their poise. Schalmont regained possession of the ball down the stretch and kept the ball in the Mustangs’ end to prevent any chance at a tying goal.

Schalmont still has one more regional game to win on Saturday against the Section VII/X champion in order to return to the state Class B final four on Nov. 16-17 in the Cortland/Homer area.

Schalmont won its second consecutive Section II title last Saturday by beating Broadalbin-Perth 4-0 at Stillwater High School. The Sabres scored three times in the first half to take control, and goaltender Gabrielle Juers stopped 10 shots to pick up the shutout.

DiCocco led the way with two goals, while Gallo and Rachael Gac each contributed a goal and an assist for Schalmont.
