Cross country: Saratoga sweeps Suburban meet titles

Blue Streaks end Shaker's two-year reign as boys division champs

— The Saratoga Springs boys cross country team ended Shaker’s two-year reign as Suburban Council champions.

Four Blue Streaks finished in the top 10 to help Saratoga claim the title at last Saturday’s league meet at Saratoga Spa State Park. The Blue Streaks finished with 36 points, well ahead of runner-up Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (97 points).

Aidan Tooker led Sara-toga’s pack with a fourth-place finish in a time of 15:43.46.

“I just went out fast and held on tight,” said Tooker, one of two fresh-men who started for the Blue Streaks in the league meet.

The rest of Saratoga’s pack was close behind Tooker. Evan Quinones, Brent Freestone and J. Gavin Gaynor swept sixth through eighth place, and Travis Briggs finished 11th.

“It was a big team effort,” said Tooker.

Averill Park’s Andrew Tario won the individual title with a time of 15:21.72. Shenendehowa’s Dan Janeczko was second with a time of 15:29.71, and Bethlehem’s Stephen Booker finished third with a time of 15:33.60. Shen’s Mike Borini added a 10th-place finish with a time of 15:55.60.

The majority of BH-BL’s runners finished between 13th and 17th place. Patrick McGuinness led the Spar-tans with a 13th-place finish in a time of 16:00.38, less than two seconds ahead of teammate John Rabideau. Joe Girard was 17th with a time of 16:10.36.

Saratoga was also dominant on the girls’ side at the league meet. The Blue Streaks had four runners in the top 10 to win the team title with 28 points. BH-BL placed second with 63 points.

Saratoga’s Taylor Driscoll eased to the individual title with a time of 17:29.56. Driscoll’s teammate, Keelin Hollowood, was second with a time of 17:42.96, and Olivia Morrow placed fourth with a time of 17:50.49 for the Blue Streaks.

Shen’s Caroline Hampton (sixth place, 18:09.74), Saratoga’s Sarah Morin (eighth, 18:18.28) and BH-BL’s Meagan Roecker (ninth, 18:34.55) and Emily Digman (10th, 18:41.53) also had top-10 performances at the league meet.

Saratoga, Shen, BH-BL and the rest of the Subur-ban Council returns to Saratoga Spa State Park Friday for the Section II Cross Country Championships.
