continued Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson provides services in 12counties within the Capital District and the Mohawk Valley. They visit more than 40 public schools as guest speakers.
“The health educators are exceptional, why they invite Planned Parenthood in is because Planned Parenthood educators have specialized training to teach the complex topic of sexual health, said Linda Scharf, director of communications for Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson. “This is an enhancement and it’s a collaboration, the teachers tell us what they’d like us to cover.”
Scharf said she expects Planned Parenthood would be asked back into Shen classrooms.
“We fully expect to be invited back. We see this as a victory for the Shen students, families in the district and of course Planned Parenthood,” said Scharf.
If that happens, Silfer argued the district should allow students to opt out of those lessons.
The sexual education curriculum is taught in 11th and12 grades, but part of the committee’s report recommended brining that into 10th grade instead. That change has not been adopted.
