ROTTERDAM Mohonasen Central School District officials on Wednesday, Sept. 19, said they received a report a man may be approaching children at or around bus stops and asking for directions. The man has asked children to meet him at another location so he can give them free bicycles, officials said.
The man was described as tall with unwashed shoulder length grey hair, wearing eyeglasses, smoking and appearing unshaven. He has been seen driving an older silver pickup truck in good condition.
Police and district officials were contacted about the situation and the district’s Transportation Department has alerted bus drivers. The district sent a letter home to parents on Wednesday.
“We encourage you to speak to your children this evening about the importance of not talking to strangers,” district officials said. “We also encourage you to work within the community to provide adult supervision at your child’s bus stop to monitor their safety.”
The district provided an update on Thursday, Sept. 20, and said it received several calls regarding the letter. Also, it said “several rumors” about the man have been circulating. It assured parents police are investigating the reports.
The district urged parents noticing anything out of the ordinary, or children mentioning such incident, to contact the Rotterdam Police Department at 355-7331.
