Police: Sand Creek Middle School student struck by car on way to school

— The Colonie Police Department is currently investigating an accident where a fifth grader was struck by a vehicle while on her way to school Monday morning, police said.

Sand Creek Middle School student Madison Almonte, 10, was hit by a truck driven by 46-year-old Colonie resident Mark Battista at 7:35 a.m., police said. Witnesses said Almonte ran out in front of the eastbound vehicle, a short distance from where there is an active crossing guard employed by the Town of Colonie, police said.

Almonte received medical attention at the scene and was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital for further evaluation, including a CAT scan.

South Colonie School District spokesperson John Noetzel said he heard from Almonte's parents and she was doing better.

Police said Battista is not expected to be charged in the accident.
