LETTER: Appointment an idea whose time has come

Editor, The Spotlight:

It’s time to eliminate the elected office of town highway superintendent in Bethlehem. There is no traditionally Republican method for plowing streets, nor is there a specific way that Democrats repair sidewalks. So why do we select the head of the highway department through a political process?

The commissioner of public works currently oversees town water and sewer systems and is accountable to the elected Town Board and supervisor. It makes fiscal and programmatic sense to consolidate highway maintenance into the Department of Public Works. Let’s get this done by voting yes on the April 30 referendum.
