State Police initiative aims to keep thruway safe

— During the final holiday of the summer, police are stepping up enforcement efforts to ensure motorists keep the thruway safe and drive responsibly.

State Police and the state Thruway Authority on Wednesday, Aug. 21, announced the initiative “Operation Summer Brake” will begin Monday, Aug. 26, and continue through Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2.

The initiative focuses on preventing “crash-causing” behavior, which includes driving while intoxicated, aggressive driving and speeding. The increased thruway enforcement efforts will also target drivers using their cell phone and electronic devices while driving, along with conducting seatbelt checks, according to State Police Cpt. Michael Eaton.

"Labor Day, the last holiday of the summer season, usually leads to higher traffic volume on the Thruway,” Eaton said in a statement. “(State Police) and the Thruway Authority make it their business to help motorists get to their destination safely."

Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas Madison said through the initiative the agency encourages drivers to be alert, drive responsibly, obey speed limits and avoid all distractions.

“We are committed to working with New Yorkers and the State Police to maintain the Thruway’s outstanding safety record,” Madison said in a statement.
