Letter: Kirby a model choice for Bethlehem town justice

As a member of the Bethlehem Town Board and a practicing attorney, I believe there are few positions more serious or consequential to our community than our town justices. The decisions of the town justices can have profound impacts on individual citizens and our town as a whole. Because of the significance of the office, electing the right person as Bethlehem’s town justice is of the utmost importance. The best judges combine a deep knowledge of the law with experience, thoughtfulness, impartiality, industry, and the hard-to-define yet critically important quality of a judicial temperament. I am supporting Andy Kirby in the Sept. 10 primary election for town justice because I know that Mr. Kirby has all of these qualities and will make an ideal town justice.

Andy Kirby has been a town prosecutor in Bethlehem for the past nine years, and in that time he has handled thousands of cases and numerous trials in our town court. Mr. Kirby is an expert in the types of cases the court handles, is familiar with the court’s procedures and has positive cooperative relationships with the court staff and police officers who work there. Mr. Kirby would thus have more direct experience in the Bethlehem town court than any incoming town justice in memory.

In addition to his wealth of experience as the town prosecutor, Mr. Kirby is also a successful lawyer in private practice. He is an accomplished and well-respected trial attorney in the local legal community and a founding partner at Conway & Kirby, LLP.

Mr. Kirby would also make a model town justice because he is fully invested in our community and has a deep understanding of the people of our town and what makes Bethlehem a unique and special place to live, work and raise a family. He has three school-aged children and has spent many years as a coach and fan at youth sporting events.

We have been extremely fortunate in Bethlehem to have had a strong history of exceedingly effective and wise town justices. It is because I have no doubt that Andy Kirby would continue and contribute to that tradition that I am endorsing him to be the next Bethlehem Town Justice.
