Police: Volunteer firefighter steals and sells department equipment

— A volunteer firefighter was arrested Monday for allegedly stealing and selling Shaker Road-Loudonville Fire Department equipment, Colonie Police said.

Over the past month, James E. Turley, 39, of 592 Central Ave. in Albany, allegedly stole seven helmets, one fire jacket, a pair of fire trousers, one pair of gloves, one air mask face piece, one harness and rescue system from the Shaker Road-Loudonville Fire Department and sold them to the X Change Cash and Trade at 1121 Central Ave. in Albany, police said. On Wednesday, Jan. 16, the crime was discovered after another local fire department member heard about the items at the store. The thefts totaled $3,644.92.

Turley was arraigned in Colonie Justice Court and sent to the Albany County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 bail. He was charged with grand larceny in the third degree. His next court appearance will be on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in Colonie Justice Court.
