GUILDERLAND – The Flying Dutchmen varsity boys let one get away at home Friday, Dec. 16, loosing a Suburban Council matchup to undefeated Shenendehowa, 60-53.
Guilderland (2-2, 2-2) clawed back from a 17-10 deficit after the first quarter to take a 32-27 lead into the half.
The Dutchmen built its biggest lead, 10 points, midway through the third quarter but Shen hit some clutch free throws and began chipping away. The game was tied 46-46 with 6:11 left in the game.
The Plainsmen took the lead 48-46 on the next possession and never trailed again. Shen outscored Guilderland 22-9 in the final period.
Shen senior standout Luke Hicks led all scorers with 33 points, including hitting three threes and going 14 for 15 from the line. Mike Pizziketti chipped in 12 points and Jalia Benson added two threes. T.J. Sangare had five points and Evan Warner and Evan McMahon each had a basket to round out the Plainsmen scoring.
Guilderland seniors Michael Henderson and Michael Wine each had 14 for the Dutchmen with Wine hitting four threes in the second quarter. Senior Kevin Green chipped in seven and Andrew Boeri and George Marinopoulos had six each. Grant Mengel and Antonio Lia had four points and two, respectively to round out the scoring for the Dutchman.
Guilderland will travel to Shaker on Tuesday, Dec. 20 while Shen will square off against Bethlehem at home.
