Schenectady County Historical Society gives and in-depth look at St. Nick

The Schenectady County Historical Society will present a lecture by food historian Peter Rose entitled, "Saint Nicolas: The Saint Who Became Santa," at the Schenectady County Historical Society, 32 Washington Ave., on Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The slide-lecture presented by Rose talks about the early history of the life of the saint; explains the various changes in his veneration; and realtes how he was brought to America by the Dutch in the 17th Century, and again, transformed into the Santa of the 19th Century. The talk emcompasses the subjects of literature, religion, the fine arts and Dutch food.

Rose has lectured on a vareity of topics related to Dutch-American culinary history at venues including the Smithsonian Institute, the National Gallery of Art, the Culinary Institute of America, New York University and the New York Historical Society. Rose has also curated the exhibit "Matters of Taste," which looked at 17th Century Dutch art and its use in food.
