Children's book drive for troops on Saturday

Spotlight Newsroom 11/17/09More articles
Bethlehem Girl Scout Troop 1229 is looking for donations of children’s books for a unique program that aims to connect troops serving overseas with their families.

The United Through Reading program provides service members with the book, which they read aloud while being recorded. A video DVD is sent home to his or her family and played for their child, who reads along with a copy of the book if possible. The child’s reaction is recorded by the other parent and emailed back to the soldier.

It creates a circle that is intended to connect the service member with his or her family back home and boost morale.

Girl Scouts will be collecting books from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Bethlehem Town Hall on Saturday, Nov. 21. New or gently used books appropriate for infants up to 16-year-olds are requested.
