Emergency responders to be recognized

The efforts of two Bethlehem police officers, an Albany County EMT and a member of the Delmar Fire Department will be recognized tonight during a meeting of emergency services workers.

The organizations involved in responding to multiple explosions and a subsequent fire at 151 Adams Place, Delmar, on Saturday, Dec. 19, will gather for a closed door critique session this evening, said Delmar Fire Department Chief Greg Gould, during which time the individuals will be singled out for their contributions.

The meeting of emergency responders is routine after such an event.

Bethlehem police officers Kenneth Beck and George Travis were first to arrive on the scene Saturday and entered the smoking residence after being told that 15-year-old Keenan Sanchez was in the basement. On their heels were Albany County EMT Eric Kerr and a Delmar firefighter who assisted in carrying Sanchez out, said Gould.

“It was a team effort on everybody’s part,” he said.

Sanchez was transported from Albany Medical Center to Westchester Medical Center Burn Unit, where he was last listed as being in “fair condition.”

Bethlehem Police Lt. Tomas Heffernan attributed Sanchez’s rescue to a quick response on the part of emergency services.

Bethlehem Supervisor Jack Cunningham said that while no formal award is planned, he would mention the actions of emergency service personnel at the Wednesday, Dec. 23, meeting of the Town Board.

“I am going to talk a little bit about their heroism over there the other day,” he said.
