Regional spellers compete at Proctors

Capital District students will compete at Proctors Theaters on Monday, March 15, for the 2010 Capital Region Spelling Bee.

The 5 p.m. event includes districts throughout the capital district, with Scotia-Glenville, Niskayuna, Schalmont and Mohonasen all represented at the event.

In Rotterdam,fifth grader Emily Helinski and 8th grader Jacob Nuding will represent the Mohonasen School District, while eighth grader Lucas Curtin will be the lone represenative from the Schalmont School District.

In Niskayuna, fifth grader Andrew Hartana, eighth grader Dimple Permaul, seventh grader Marting Schreiner and Max Schutzman will represent the Niskayuna School District.

From Scotia-Glenville, fifth grader Sophie Calderon and seventh grader Theodore Meiners will represent the Scotia-Glenville School District.

“The regional spelling bee is an exciting event that recognizes the scholarship and dedication of students throughout our region,” said Kathryn Gerbino, Assistant District Superintendant for Instruction at Capital Region BOCES,in a March 10 press release. “All students who compete are winners because they make reading and learning our language a priority ― these young contestants are surely role models for all our students.”

The event is sponsored by Capital Region BOCES, the Times Union, Albany Public Library, Hannaford Supermarkets, Proctors Theater and Time Warner Cable.

The overall capital region champion will be given an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 2 through 4, a computer donated by Hannford Supermarkets, a $200 U.S. Savings Bond, a Merriam-Webster Third New International Dictionary, the Samuel L. Sugarman $100 U.S. Savings Bond Award, an Amazon.com $40 gift certificate, a one year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Online and a special gift from Proctors, according to information from the event.

Final round winners will be given a $75 U.S. Savings Bond, A Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary and a prize from Proctors Theater.
