Obituaries 07/22/08 Hayes, Edward J. Edward J. Hayes Jr., 72, of Delmar, died at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany on July 22. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Vera McKnight Hayes and attended the Sacred Heart School and graduated from LaSalle Institute of Troy in 1955. He attended Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., and was employed by the former National Commercial Bank and Trust Co., which became Key Bank NA. Mr. Hayes held several positions including teller, branch manager and assistant vice president. He was a driver and teller on a mobile bank bus in the early years of his career, and later managed branches in Ravena, Elsmere and Westerlo, retiring n 1994 after 30 years of service. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Church in Delmar and a member and executive officer in several organizations. Mr. Hayes was president of the Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs in Berne in 1987-1988 and most recently a member of the Bethlehem Kiwanis Club. Mr. Hayes was a member of the New York Air Force Association since 1979, treasurer of the Albany Chapter AFA No. 197 since 1979, AFA state vice president 1988-1993 and a receiver of the AFA Exceptional Service Award in 1998. He was a life member of Empire State Aerosciences Museum in Scotia and served in the Army Reserves, from 1958 until 1967, and the Army National Guard, from 1981 until 1983, attaining the rank of sergeant. Mr. Hayes was an avid Yankee fan and an exceptional tennis player in Prospect Park in Troy. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Long Hayes; a daughter, Sarah Lynn Hayes; two sisters Patricia A. (Carl) Honecker of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Linda M. (John) Mainwaring of Guilford, Conn.; a brother, Robert K. Hayes of Center Brunswick; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Services were from the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle in Delmar, and arrangements were by the Applebee Funeral Home in Delmar. Burial was in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Delmar.
