Obituaries 10/28/09 Rose, Richard Mahlon CLIFTON PARK Richard Mahlon Rose died peacefully on October 28, 2009 in Kingston Hospital with his family by his side. Born in Erie, Pa, on March 21, 1933, he was the son of the late Mahlon and Pauline (Fawcett) Rose. After the death of his father, his mother and Three brothers moved to Albion, Pa., where he spent the next 18 years. He graduated from the Albion High School in 1950, where he excelled in all sports, winning a spot on the district basketball team. He also participated in District Band and represented his school at the All State Chorus Festival in Harrisburg. Richard entered Clarion State College on a basketball scholarship following high school, but after completing one year, was drafted into the US Army. Because of his athletic experience, he was fortunate to serve in the U.S. Special Services, playing football, basketball and baseball for the post teams in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. His love of the Southwest exists even today. Following his Army discharge he entered Edinboro State College, graduating in 1958 with honors and a mathematics degree. He joined The Travelers Insurance Co. in Erie, Pa. and held corporate positions in Hartford, CT.,White Plains,NY and Albany, NY. In 1986 he left The Travelers and he and his wife purchased the Olaf Lundberg Insurance Agency in Delmar. In 1991 he obtained the Butler Brown Insurance Agency and remained in the business until his retirement in 2000. During this time he taught courses to train applicant’s in taking the Life, Accident and Health examinations for an insurance agents license. He was a superb teacher and boasted a 90% passing rate on a first time basis. He also was approved as a monitor for insurance continuing education. While living in Clifton Park he was a committee person for the Republican Party, he coached Plainsmen Junior Football for 5 years, taught courses in the evening at the high school and never missed a Shen football game. He held licenses in New York State Life, Accident and Health Insurance, the National Association of Securities Dealers, and Stocks and Bonds and Tax Shelters Certification. His professional affiliations were many and varied Richard enjoyed camping on the islands of Lake George and for 25 years he obtained the same island where he set up his “village” of tents and boats. He brought friends and relatives to enjoy the lake and mountains in style. Those who saw his set up never viewed camping quite the same. He also spent time at Cape Cod enjoying the ocean and the seafood and he and his wife did extensive traveling throughout the country and abroad. Richard’s greatest love was his family and holidays were always special occasions to bring everyone together. He had many friends, associates and old college pals with whom he corresponded---he loved life and lived every minute of it. His love for music, particularly waltz and march pieces was evident in his extensive record and CD collections. He will be missed by all who knew him and enjoyed his stories and anecdotes. He is survived by his wife Shirley Ann Rose, his sons James Rose of Mechanicville, NY, William Rose of Clifton Park, NY, a daughter Saundra Rose of Monson, MA, and her companion, Dorothy Fisher, stepdaughters Debra Berry of Clifton Park, NY, Donna (Michael) Hennel of Elmhurst, IL and his grandchildren, Hayley, Alexa, Michael, Jack, Blake and Jaime. He is also survived by two brothers, William of Albion, PA and John of Magadore, OH; He is predeacesd by one brother, Howard of Altoona, PA and former wife Ileane Stahlsmith Rose. He also will be missed by many nieces and nephews from California to Florida. The family would like to thank Dr. Lawrence Corbett, the doctors and staff of Albany Medical Center Hospital, the doctors and staff of the Northeast Center for Special Care in Kingston, NY and the doctors and staff of The Kingston Hospital, especially Dr. Sanwood Oyugi, who cared for Richard during his final days. They exemplified the finest in medical care with compassion and empathy. A memorial service will be held for Richard at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Route 146 in Clifton Park on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 11:00 AM. All friends and relatives are invited to the service.
