DELMAR John S. DeFlumer, 98, died February 22, 2012 of natural causes.
Born in Ravena, N.Y. to Saverio (Samuel) DeFlumer and Hazel Sickles, he attended Christian
Brothers Academy and Albany Business College. As a young man he volunteered to work in
the Civilian Conservation Corps, before taking an office job at the New York Central Railroad,
where his father was employed. Quickly he remarked, “those debits and credits give me a
headache” and thereafter worked on the trains outdoors, where he was happiest. John was a
devoted husband and father. With a growing family, he took a second full-time job building
houses, to save enough to build their own home. A life-long bowling enthusiast, he and his wife,
Edith, taught the sport to their seven children, and organized a community youth league. John
was pre-deceased by his wife Edith Murray, of Kingston, NY, his brothers Frank and Carl, and
his sisters Diana Brino and Mary St. Louis. He is survived by daughters Beverly Anthony of
Myrtle Beach, S.C., Joyce DeFlumer, of Patterson, NY, Deborah DeFlumer of Columbus, OH,
Jean DeFlumer of Gainesville, FL, Laura Palmer of Liverpool, NY, Elizabeth Paul of Utica,
NY, and son John Michael DeFlumer of Delmar, who cared for John in his home for many years.
John will be dearly missed by his twenty-four grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and canine
protector, Zeus. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Donna Cooper for her loving
care. A funeral mass was held on Saturday at St. Thomas Church, Delmar, NY, after calling
hours at Meyers Funeral Home, also in Delmar. Interment was to be at St. Agnes Cemetery,
Menands. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Peter’s Community Hospice, 315
South Manning Blvd, Albany, NY, in lieu of flowers.
