A talented sophomore at the Clayton A. Bouton High School got the spotlight as his photographs were put on display at the school’s Performing Arts Center from Nov. 29 through Jan. 4.

Student photographer Mitchell Joyce said he shoots his digital photos in color and makes them black and white when he feels he needs to do so.

“I am hoping this photo exhibit will expand my aspirations of a potential career in media arts and get my name out there as someone who loves taking pictures,” he said.

Joyce said he takes photos of anything that’s around him. Almost none of what he does is posed.

“Sometimes it’s difficult to take some of the photos I take because of my rigorous attention to lighting. Most of what I do that makes the photos what they really are takes place on the computer screen editing my photos,” Joyce said. “All my photos are Photoshopped to make my not-so-extraordinary life into something extraordinary and beautiful that only my mind and my computer collectively can create through an idea of a perfect world.”

“He’s got an exceptional talent,” Triller said. “He is self-taught, self-motivated and has an extraordinary eye for design.”

Triller said she was not expecting anything incredible, but when she saw his photos, she knew he had the talent to have his own display at the high school.

“A kid having his own show is an inspiration to other kids,” she said. “It needed to be shared with the rest of the school.”

High School Principal Mark Diefendorf said the school’s art display area has been used for resident artists and for students who have won the prestigious Principal’s Art Award, but it was the first time that one student had the honor of having his own exhibit.

“This is the first time that one student has had enough exceptional art to be displayed as the centerpiece art exhibit at the school,” he said. “This is an excellent venue for him to display his work.”
