News Charlton Town Hall is set to open (Saratoga County, Ballston, Burnt Hills, Charlton) Posted on: 07/08/09 Charles Wiff, Spotlight Staff email: wiffc@spotlightnews.com At long last, it’s complete. Workers are putting finishing touches on Charlton’s new Town Hall this week, over two years past what officials envisioned when they approved the project in 2005. The two-story Colonial structure came in costing just over $4 million, well above the $3.2 million price tag that planners borrowed for. The town had to hire an emergency contractor and incur additional costs when the first company to work on the project, Schmidt & Schmidt Inc., was fired in 2007 after allegedly making slow progress. The town hopes to make up the extra cost through a lawsuit against the contractor, said Supervisor Allan Grattidge. “We’re still pursuing our legal options,” he said. “I’m not forecasting a town tax to pay for this building.” In the meantime, the town has taken out short-term bonds to cover the overages. The first official business to take place in the new Town Hall will be a session of Town Court on Thursday, July 9. The Town Clerk’s office will be open the following day. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held before the Town Board’s meeting on Monday, July 13, at 7 p.m. Various people who have been part of the project, in addition to Assemblyman James Tedisco, R-Schenectady, and Sen. Hugh Farley, R-Schenectady, have been invited to the ribbon cutting. The current Town Hall, located just down Charlton Road in much smaller offices, will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the move. “We’re certainly excited to get into the building. It’s been a long process,” said Grattidge. A formal dedication is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 25. An open house will precede and follow the ceremony.
