Current Saratoga Springs Assistant Chief of Police, Christopher Cole, will step into the position of police chief on Dec. 13 when Chief Edward Moore retires. The announcement came at a noon press conference on Friday, Dec. 4 after several days of discussion about who had the authority to appoint him, Public Safety Commissioner Ron Kim or Commissioner-elect Richard Wirth.
In addition to Cole, two other candidates, Capt. Michael Biss and Lt. Michael Chowski, were interviewed by Kim and Wirth last week. They all scored in the top three of a civil service exam administered internally.
Moore served as police chief for six and a half years and announced he was retiring in the hopes that he could save at least one of the seven police officers set to be laid off under the 2010 budget.
