SCHENECTADY – It was the No. 1 seed versus the No. 2 for the Section II hockey title – but in the end it wasn’t even close.
In front of a large, boisterous crowd, the top seed Eagles from Bethlehem dominated LaSalle 7-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Union College to win its first ever Section II championship.
Thomas Liebold had a hat trick, Mike Bievenue had a goal and two assists, Dylan Kowalsky had a goal and an assist, Justin Chenaille had a goal and an assist and Pat Engelbride had a goal and an assist.
Senior goalie Alex Breiner got the shut out for Bethlehem.
Bethlehem came into the game with a 17-3-2 record and an undefeated 11-0-2 in league play while LaSalle, last year’s champion, was 15-5-2 overall and 11-3-2 in league play. The two squads met once during the year and skated to a 4-4 tie.
Bethlehem will play Massena of Section 10 on Saturday, March 3, for the D1 regional title. The winner of that game will play in the state Final Four.
