DELMAR — This year’s Turkey Trot concluded with an exciting finish, resulting in a two-way share for first place, on Thursday, Nov. 22.
Noah Valvo, of Delanson, and Keith Machavee, of Delmar, were at the hip when they both turned the corner into the Bethlehem Central Middle School parking lot for the final stretch. As the two runners approached the finish line, Machavee appeared to have the lead, but Valvo stretched his arm out across the line for a dramatic finish. Both registered an unofficial time of 16:23 to take home the trophy.
Abby Halm, a native of Alexandria, Virginia, earned the first place finish among women runners when she crossed the finish line at 20:21.
Running enthusiasts braved bitterly cold temperatures to participate in the Thursday morning race. Nearly all of the day’s runners huddled inside the middle school to take shelter from a sub-zero wind chill.
Weather forecasters predicted record cold temperatures for the Northeast as a winter cold front swept over the region the night before. The front produced wind gusts as high as 25 mph. Those winds rushed over a snowy landscape making the quiet town feel more like the inside of a freezer.
The Albany International Airport recorded the temperature at 11 degrees shortly before the start of the race. With a steady wind of 14 mph, the calculated wind chill was -5 degrees once the race began.
