Update: The time and date of the Section 2 Class AA boys soccer semifinals has been changed.
BETHLEHEM — Derin Gumustop’s goal in the 50th minute lifted Bethlehem to a 2-1 victory over Christian Brothers Academy in the Section 2 Class AA boys soccer quarterfinals Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Noah Weinstock sent a through ball to Gumustop on the run, who knocked it into the lower right quadrant of the net to break a 1-1 tie 10 minutes into the second half.
Brady VanEpps scored off a feed from Rob Amore in the third minute to give visiting CBA (9-9-0) a quick 1-0 lead, but Kevin Piccolino finished off Aidan Lynch’s corner kick later in the first half to tie the game for Bethlehem (15-2-0). The Eagles remained on the attack through the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half up through Gumustop’s game-winning goal.
The Brothers had several chances to tie the game later in the second half, but Bethlehem goaltender Ryan Henning and the Eagles’ defense held firm to end CBA’s eight-game winning streak. Henning finished the game with 10 saves.
Bethlehem advances to Friday night’s Sectional semifinals, where it will face Saratoga Springs at 6 p.m. at Colonie Central High School. The early semifinal contest at 4 p.m. pits Shenendehowa against Guilderland.
