COLONIE – The Farmers’ Market will open for its 11th season on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crossings. It will run every Saturday through Sept. 29.
The market will feature an mix of 45 new and returning vendors, live music and a featured clown each week. There will also be occasional story hours for children.
“On summer Saturdays, it’s really fun to stop by the Farmers’ Market. There’s a great mix of fresh produce and locally produced specialty items,” said Supervisor Paula Mahan. “Plus, it’s a good place to meet and greet your Colonie friends and neighbors.”
On opening day, the market will feature the 2017 Blues Artist of the year Jimy Graham and balloon sculptures by Mischief the Clown, both from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and a story hour beginning at 11 a.m.
The story hours are a new feature this year and will be presented by Colonie Librarian Beth Bomba in the Gazebo (or the Meeting House in case of rain.) Story hours will also be held on June 16, July 14, and Aug. 11.
The all-volunteer Friends of the William K. Sanford Town Library will again be selling reasonably priced used books from its popular Book Nook stall at the market.
As in the past, the Market will feature traditional fare such as vegetables, fruits, flowers, plants, herbs, eggs, meats, spices, organic products, jams, breads, and baked goods, including gluten-free and vegan items.
The Market will also feature spirits, wine, beer, cider, oils, vinegars, pickles, maple syrup, coffee, teas, popcorn, chips, lemonade, smoothies, nut butters, honey, soaps, therapeutic oils, lotions, candles, beeswax, and beauty and massage products – plus pre-prepared Italian, Mediterranean, Mexican, and traditional cuisine, and dog treats.
The Farmers’ Market is part of the state Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program and accepts WIC and seniors’ farmer’s market checks, which are provided directly to qualifying seniors age 60 and over by the Town’s Senior Resources Department.
Participating clowns are Q.T. Pie and Mischief, who each week will provide activities such as balloon sculpture or face-painting.
The Farmers’ Market is also one of the few dog-friendly markets in the Capital District.
