GUILDERLAND – The 17-year-old driver of a car that crashed into a tree on Hurst Road has died, according to the school district.
Alyssa Gelfand, of Witte Road, died on Tuesday, May 30, as a result of the injuries sustained in the Sunday, May 28, accident.
The two passengers in Gelfand’s 2007 Honda CRV, 16-year-old Sophia Melfe of Debutante Manor, and 17-year-old Sergio Medina of Greenthorne Boulevard, were treated for non-life threatening injuries at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to Alyssa’s family and friends and to the many people whose lives she touched,” according to a statement on the school district’s website.
Gelfand was a student at Guilderland High School as are Melfe and Medina. The district is extending counseling services to students and staff.
According to police, speed was a contributing factor in the accident but alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this time.
